Marriage and Family Life Ministry in the Diocese of Brentwood
We have the joy and challenge of communicating a clear and positive vision of family and marriage because we believe in it, and that, with the help of God, it is attainable. We also believe that the welfare of the family is of vital importance for the welfare of the Church and the world, and finding new ways of supporting it is a vital part of the renewal of our diocese.
We recognise the importance of the sacrament of marriage and that families are a crucial forum for evangelisation. Parents have the primary responsibility for handing the faith on to their children, with support from the wider Church. Families also have a part to play in outside the home, especially by taking on works of charity, welcoming others into their home and witnessing to their faith. The family represents a crucial point of difference when the values of the Church are compared with the world’s and stands as a visible reminder of God’s original blessing of creation and his plan for humanity.
Marriage and Family Life ministry includes the following areas of responsibility:
- Marriage preparation
- Marriage enrichment
- Laity in the world and the Church, including the concerns of women and men
- The promotion and protection of marriage and family life
- Natural family planning

Introduction to Natural Family Planning
Natural Family Planning (NFP) is a natural, healthy and effective method which unites husband and wife in the shared responsibility of creating and caring for their family.
The Catholic Church recognises that couples, in exercising responsible parenthood, may for good reasons decide not to have additional children for either a certain or an indefinite period of time. However the Church also calls on every couple to respect the essential connection between procreation and the intimate union of husband and wife.
