Course Overview
With rising energy costs and increasing expectations around environmental sustainability, effective energy management is becoming an essential part of managing school buildings and grounds.
This course provides school leaders, business managers, premises staff and governors with practical guidance on improving energy efficiency, reducing running costs and planning the transition towards net zero carbon emissions.
The session will explore how energy is typically used in schools and identify opportunities to make immediate savings through relatively simple measures, including improvements to heating controls, lighting, hot water systems and equipment management.
It will also examine longer-term energy efficiency and decarbonisation measures, including building insulation, LED lighting, solar panels, heat pumps and alternatives to traditional fossil fuel heating systems.
Participants will learn about the importance of energy audits and how to develop a comprehensive, costed and prioritised decarbonisation plan. This will include consideration of project feasibility, potential funding opportunities and how improvements can be incorporated into longer-term estate management and investment strategies.
Key topics covered:
- Understanding typical school energy consumption and identifying areas of inefficiency.
- Quick wins to reduce energy waste and running costs.
- Improving heating controls, lighting and building insulation.
- Solar energy and renewable electricity generation.
- Heat pumps and options for replacing fossil fuel heating systems.
- Understanding net zero carbon and the implications for school buildings.
- Energy audits, decarbonisation planning and funding considerations.
Who should attend?
Headteachers, school business managers, premises and estates staff, governors, academy trust representatives and anyone involved in managing school buildings or planning capital improvements.
Learning outcomes
By the end of the session, participants will have a better understanding of how their school uses energy, which improvements could deliver the greatest benefits, and how to develop a practical, financially informed approach to improving energy efficiency and working towards net zero.
The course aims to help schools make informed decisions that reduce operating costs, improve building performance and support the responsible stewardship of their estates.
