Young leaders deepen skills at Student Leadership Conference

Student leaders from schools across the Diocese of Brentwood came together recently for the Student Leadership Conference, a day of inspiration, reflection and action organised in collaboration with Clodagh Benning, Secondary Link Advisor in the Diocesan Education Department, Caritas Brentwood and the Brentwood Catholic Youth Service (BCYS). Rooted in faith and service, the conference encouraged young people to develop their leadership skills, deepen their sense of social responsibility and consider how they can make a positive difference within their schools and local communities.

Throughout the day, students had the opportunity to work collaboratively with their leadership teams, share ideas with pupils from other schools and begin planning initiatives for the year ahead. Laura, head girl at St Mark’s West Essex, spoke of the value of networking and learning from others, explaining how the conference helped her team develop ideas for enrichment activities, clubs, revision sessions and competitions that will benefit their school community. Ruby, deputy head girl at St Mark’s West Essex, described the conference as an enjoyable and eye-opening experience, highlighting how discussions on leadership and faith strengthened her confidence and helped her prepare for the responsibilities ahead. She also reflected on the privilege of meeting Bishop Alan and learning from his example of leadership and service.

A key focus of the conference was encouraging student leaders to place faith at the heart of their decision-making. Through discussion, reflection and planning activities, students explored how they can create welcoming and inclusive school communities where every person feels valued, respected and able to contribute. Many expressed a desire to ensure that all students have a voice and feel empowered to play an active role in shaping school life.

Vaughn, Head Boy at St Mark’s West Essex, reflected: The experience was very helpful. It showed me how I can be a leader while promoting the Catholic ethos which is important for our school. My favourite part of the day was the networking as it gave us the opportunity to gain some new ideas to introduce to the school.”

The Student Leadership Conference demonstrated the important role young people play in the life of our Catholic schools. By bringing together student leaders from across the Diocese, the event provided an opportunity to share ideas, build confidence and strengthen a commitment to servant leadership. As these young leaders return to their schools, they do so equipped with new skills, fresh inspiration and a determination to put their faith into action in service of others.
