Catholic schools celebrate five years of Sir David Amess’ Children’s Parliament

Children from Catholic schools across the Diocese of Brentwood were invited to celebrate the fifth anniversary of the Sir David Amess Children’s Parliament at a special event in Westminster. They were joined by the Commonwealth Children’s Choir, made up of pupils from Our Lady of Grace Catholic Academy Trust in Newham, who performed for the occasion.

Founded in August 2021 by the late Sir David Amess MP, the Children’s Parliament gives primary-school pupils a meaningful opportunity to have their voices heard on issues that matter to them.

Meeting in Westminster, the young representatives took part in a commemorative debate focusing on disability rights. They discussed why every child deserves to be included, listened to and supported, regardless of their circumstances.

The anniversary celebration brought together children from different backgrounds and communities, continuing Sir David’s commitment to ensuring that young people have a voice in society. The event highlighted the importance of listening to children and recognising that age should never be a barrier to contributing to important conversations.

It also provided an opportunity to reflect on the need to ensure that children with disabilities and additional needs are heard, represented and included in society.

As special guests, the Commonwealth Children’s Choir (above left) performed ‘The Democracy Song’, alongside Alison Wheeler, a member of the pop group The Beautiful South.
