Sister Kathleen (Patricia) Staunton, known to many in the diocese as a teacher, has died. A Sister of Mercy, she was headteacher of St Edward’s Primary School, Upton Park from 1975-1981 and headteacher of St Mary’s Primary School, Tilbury from 1981-1994. She was the sister of Sr Anne-Marie (Wanstead) and Sr Rosario (Brentwood).
While at Upton Park, she developed a close relationship with West Ham FC, getting tickets for every match. After her retirement from teaching she demonstrated her zest for life with adventures in the USA and Canada; her love of the Gospel with work giving missions to schools and parishes throughout England; and her caring nature working with prisoners in Cambridge, Hull and latterly in Worthing.
