Students from St John Payne Catholic School, Chelmsford, were named winners of the Young Catholic Influencers of the Year Award 2026 after taking part in a joint-diocese event in Westminster. Twenty Year 7 students represented the school in the competition, which challenged young people to explore how Catholic Social Teaching can inspire positive change in society. Their award-winning project focused on homelessness and the dignity of every human person.
Reflecting on the experience, Year 7 student Noah Ford said: “Winning the award was a wonderful achievement, but the greatest lesson we learned was that small acts of compassion and solidarity can make a real difference.” You can watch Noah’s speech here.
The St John Payne team explored the realities of homelessness and the importance of recognising the dignity of every person. Through research, presentations and public speaking, students reflected on the Gospel call to serve those who are most vulnerable and to work for justice within their communities. Noah represented the school in the final round, speaking about the need to see Christ in those who are poor, displaced or experiencing homelessness. However, he was keen to emphasise that the success was the result of a collective effort, with all twenty students contributing to the project through research, preparation and teamwork.
The students’ commitment to this issue extends beyond the competition itself. This week, more than 100 students from St John Payne Catholic School will take part in a Sleep Out in support of Caritas Brentwood, raising awareness of homelessness and funds for the charity’s vital work. The event will provide an opportunity for students to reflect on the challenges faced by those without secure accommodation while putting their faith into action through practical support for others.
The Young Catholic Influencers of the Year Award has provided an opportunity for students to demonstrate how faith can inspire action, compassion and service. Through their work on homelessness and their continued support of Caritas Brentwood, the young people of St John Payne Catholic School are living out the principles of Catholic Social Teaching and showing that even small acts of kindness can make a lasting difference.
